Welcome

Hello and welcome to the Sewing t'HIM'ble Blog page.

First of all let me introduce myself....
My name is Drew, I live in the a small town near Manchester, I work for a engineering company as a draughtsman, have a beautiful wife and two beautiful children and enjoy a "proper" pint of real ale on occasions. Suppose you could say I am just a regular bloke, well... all except for the small matter that I like to sew.

This all started roughly about a year ago, when I bought a vintage 1965 411G Singer Sewing machine for my wife's Birthday and thought it would be good idea to get familiar with the machine, so it didn't seem too daunting at first for her and subsequently put her off. However, what I wasn't expecting was that I actually enjoyed using the machine and to cut a very long story short, I have been sewing (or attempting to) ever since.

I have a true passion for vintage style sewing and try to use original methods wherever I can. My machine of choice is a hand cranked Singer 28K, which I tend to use for most projects these days.

Another hobby of mine is restoring, repairing and servicing these vintage machines. Some of you may be aware of the "Back to Black Singers" I set up to fuel my passion for these machines and I am currently creating a new webpage to promote this business and bring life back to all those "ornaments" everyone has sat about their homes and sewing rooms. So watch this space!

  1. Looked at this as my son (husband, father of one, home brewer) is keen to sew - so far he's used my Brother embroidery machine to embellish clothes and make a Whirling Dervish outfit for a fancy dress party from a dust sheet... Is that a long bobbin Singer? I learned to sew on one of those in the 1960's and made clothes for my siblings, 2 tweed coats, dresses, trousers, sewed suede belts.... wonderful machine. Now using a Bernina 930, very solid machine, purchased when my son was 6 months old. It's probably it's 30th birthday! Irene

    1. Hi Irene,

Firstly thank you for visiting the blog and even more so for your post. It’s always great to hear of other fellow sewers, please let him know if he has any queries or wants any advice then just to get in touch. It’s a shame these days sewing is perceived as being a woman’s hobby, especially when you take into account the tailoring industry was once a dominated by males. Thing changed in my opinion, around the period when industrial sewing machines got modernised. By making them smaller in size, easier to use and more affordable it resulted in them becoming available for domestic use and… well here we are now where men are “secret sewers” ha ha.

In answer to your question, yes it is a long bobbin Singer in the photo. It’s a 28K and the bobbin inserts into a shuttle like device. Its hand cranked and is my pride and joy. It was bought completely seized and I have fully restored it back to new (this is another hobby of mine and I have restored quite a few of these type of machines now). I tend to only use this and a Singer 411G for all my projects.

Please keep following the blog, as I intend to update the progress made on the trouser making shortly and I am also currently constructing a “Completed Past Projects” page too.
Hope to hear from you again in the near future.
